Men’s 200 IM

We got our first glimpse at the newly-crowned USA-Swimming Male Swimmer of the Year in the 200 IM, when Ryan Lochte won another National Championship in 1:42.60. He trailed Austria’s Markus Rogan headed into the final 50, but finished in 24.91 to wrench away the victory. Rogan’s final mark was 1:42.94. These two will square off again in Dubai, where Rogan could have an advantage on a meters course.

Men’s 50 free

The most anticipated race of the night, and maybe the whole meet, was the men’s 50 free. It was the first short course yards rematch between Josh Schneider and Nathan Adrian, since Schneider pulled the upset victory at NCAA’s last year. Add to that Matt Grevers, the biggest man in swimming today, Vlad Morozov, the young Russian who holds the National High School record, Simon Burnett, the British sprint king, and even an appearance from Ryan Lochte (though the 50 isn’t one of his better events).

In the end, Adrian defended his long course title and touched in 19.00. William Copeland, a post-grad who trains with Cal, surprised the field to finish second in 19.21, supporting the notion that sprinters tend to get better with age. Grevers, the top overall qualifier for finals, was third in 19.30, followed by Schneider (19.32) and Morozov (19.33).

Though the Adrian-Schneider dual wasn’t the ultimate battle at this meet (and in fact nobody really challenged Adrian), the two will get to show off again in Dubai, where they will be joined by a full-force French sprint group and Brazilian Cesar Cielo–Adrian’s other, bigger rival.

Ryan swam the 200y IM and 50y free today. He finished second in the 200y IM with a time of 1:44.89. Ryan finished eighth in the 50y free with a time of 19.78. Here is how tonight's finals shape up:

Lots of big names in this race and a very close field. The final should be really exciting. Nathan Adrian holds the American record at 18.71.

The * next to a name means that person is not a U.S. citizen. I'm not sure what impact that has, if any, on the final standings. Will try to find out.

Minnesota Grand Prix - Ryan qualifies for A final in 50y free and 100y back

Ryan qualified for the A final in two of tonight's races - 50y free and 100y back. Here are his times:

50y free - 20.14 (qualified 2nd)
100y back - 47.07 (qualified 1st)

Ryan must have scratched the 500y free.

Minnesota Grand Prix - Friday Finals Results & Saturday Prelims

Friday Finals

Ryan placed 3rd in the 100y breast with a time of 54.41, almost a second faster than prelims. Ryan placed 2nd in the 100y fly with a time of 47.31. Ryan led the entire race until Ricky Berens shot ahead on the last wall.

Men's 100 Breast
Tucson Ford's Mike Alexandrov obliterated the field in his specialty event. Alexandrov posted a fast 52.13, not far off his American record of 51.56. Barry Murphy, an Irish swimmer swimming unattached for Club Wolverine, claimed runner-up honors in 54.09, holding off superstar Ryan Lochte. Lochte, swimming unattached from Gator Swim Club, managed a 54.41 for third in one of his weakest events. Lochte looked particularly fatigued during the race, losing ground on his typically-outstanding turns. Notably, 100 back national champion David Plummer made a rare appearance in a breaststroke race. Plummer, representing Minnetonka Swim Club, posted a fifth-place time of 55.18.

Men's 100 Fly
Longhorn's Ricky Berens defeated his second Olympic gold medalist in one night, taking down Ryan Lochte in the 100 fly. Lochte led convincingly at the halfway mark, but Berens used a powerful final kickout and final 25 to chase down Lochte and earn the win in 46.77. Lochte, meanwhile, faded down the stretch, holding off Club Wolverine's Alon Mandel for second place, 47.31 to 47.42.

Ryan's interviews at JAX 50

Ryan competing in JAX 50 on Saturday, April 10 - Watch it live

Ryan is competing tomorrow (Saturday, April 10) in the JAX 50 Sprint Challenge charity swim event at Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida. It's an all-out race in a 50-yard pool. Walls & underwater kicking will be key. I think Ryan has a good chance of winning even though sprinting is not his usual thing.

To make things even more exciting, on Sunday, April 11 at 2 pm (7 pm GMT) Matt Grevers and Nick Thoman are racing head-to-head in the 100 back. Grevers has the 2nd fastest time in the world in 2010 in the 100 back (53.05) and Thoman has the 5th fastest time in 2010 (53.95). It's going to be awesome.

Prelims at Florida Spring Sr. Championships - 50y free & 500y free - Saturday, Feb. 27

Here's how Ryan did in the prelims of the 50y & 500y free today:

50y free - 20.36 (2nd place going into finals)
500y free - 4:29.38 (4th place going into finals)

Looking at the results, this meet is like a duel meet between UF & FSU with some high school swimmers in the mix. Ryan was beat in the prelims by some UF swimmers.

Florida Spring Championships - 2/28 Finals; Tyler Clary wins 200y Back at Big 10 Champs

Ryan placed first in both his events Saturday at the Florida Spring Championships.

In the 50y Free, his time was 19.89 and in the 100y Back, his time was 46.20. He's gone faster this year in both events, but if he is in the middle of hard training right now, neither time is bad.

Tyler Clary won his 3rd individual event at the Big 10 championships on Saturday, the 200y Back. His time was 1:39.59, which beat the pool record formerly held by.....Ryan Lochte of all people. He did not beat Ryan's NCAA record, which is nearly 2 seconds faster. Tyler has the fastest time in Div. 1 swimming this year, just ahead of Rex Tullius and Omar Pinzon of Florida. It will be so interesting to see how Tyler does at the NCAA championships in all 3 of his events.

As a graduate of a Big 10 school other than Michigan (and one of Michigan's biggest rivals in football), it pains me a little to cheer for a Michigan athlete. The first college football game I ever went to was against Michigan, and I still remember a bunch of guys singing the x-rated version of the Michigan fight song. In fact, I can't get that song out of my head now.

Nevertheless, Tyler is a very versitile swimmer and he's good at all of the same events as Ryan. I will enjoy watching them swim against each other this summer.

Florida Spring Championships - Saturday Prelim Results (and Tyler Clary update)

Ryan swam in two events today, and the results from the morning prelims are as follows:

50y Free

1st - Lochte, Ryan S 24 DAYTONA BEACH SWIMMING - 47.65

Tonight Tyler Clary swims in the finals of the 200y back at the Big 10 champs. His time in today's prelims was 1:42.45, which is almost 5 seconds off of Ryan's NCAA record and put him in the 2nd seed. I don't think he'll break another NCAA record tonight, but I do think he'll win.

It's disappointing that there are not many news articles about Tyler breaking Ryan's NCAA record in the 400IM. And no interviews, at least that I could find. Maybe there will be something on the Big 10 channel in the future. Tyler's record is huge and should be reported, but swimming just doesn't get the media coverage it deserves. Maybe he'll get some recognition if he breaks Michael Phelps' American record at the NCAA champs.

Tyler is quickly becoming my 2nd favorite swimmer. I can't wait to see how much he can push Ryan next summer. Tyler is bad ass, as shown in this video from floswimming.com:

Final Results - 200y Free and 50y Free - 2009 So Cal Grand Prix

Ryan placed first in the 200y free with a meet-record time of 1:33.32. He tied for third in the 50 free with a time of 19.74.

Ryan's splits for the 200y free were: 21.97 45.93 (23.96) 1:09.91 (23.98) 1:33.32 (23.41). Ous Mellouli came in second at 1:33.55 and Matt Grevers placed third with a time of 1:34.31.

Matt Grevers won the 50y free with a time of 19.15. William Copeland came in second at 19.70 and Joey Hale tied Ryan for third at 19.74.

The race video for Sunday night's finals has not been posted on swimnetwork.com, and I did not watch live. I will post the video links and comment on the races once they are available.

I'm excited to see how Ryan does today, competing in the 100y fly, 100y breast and 100y back.
