Ryan finishes 2nd to Tyler Clary in the 200m back

Ryan had his second silver medal of the meet in the 200m back. His time was 2:00.21 and man did he look tired. Tyler Clary won with a very impressive time of 1:56.61, the 3rd fastest time in the world this year.

Earlier today at the Japanese championships, Ryosuke Irie swam a 1:54.08, which is textile world record and .04 faster than Ryan's time at Pan Pacs last summer (1:54.12). This summer is going to be interesting!!

Tyler Clary had a really good meet and his time in the 200 back is very impressive for this time of year. He has to be extremely tired too. Tyler's other events were 200 free (8th), 400 IM (1st), 200 fly (3rd), 400 free (1st), 200 IM (3rd). Nothing less than a 200 and competing in the "A" final in each event. Very impressive!

Ryan won the "C" final of the 100m free. His time was 51.3.

Results from Saturday - Florida Sr. Spring Championships

Ryan scratched both finals today, 50 free & 500 free. Hope everything is OK.

In other news, Tyler Clary won the 200 back, 200 IM & 400 IM at the Big 10 championships. His times were good for this part of the season, even without last year's fast suits. According to www.collegeswimming.com, Tyler's times in all 3 events were the fastest so far this season.

I can't wait to see how he does at the NCAA's and at Nationals this summer.

Duel in the Pool 2009 - European Team Announced and US Short Course Nationals

Duel in the Pool 2009

The European team for Duel in the Pool, which takes place on December 18-19 in Manchester, England has been announced. Laszlo Cseh is not on the list, which is truly a shame. According to swimnews.com, the following swimmers are on the European men's team:

Britain:
  • David Davies - Loughborough
  • James Goddard - Stockport
  • Thomas Haffield - City of Cardiff
  • Michael Rock - Stockport
  • Liam Tancock - Loughborough
  • Christopher Walker-Hebborn - Bath
  • Robbie Renwick - City of Glasgow

Italy:

  • Federico Colbertaldo - GS Fiamme Azzurre / Montebelluna Nuoto
  • Christian Galenda - Fiamme Gialle / Canottieri Aniene
  • Edoardo Giorgetti - Canottieri Aniene
  • Filippo Magnini - Larus Nuoto
  • Luca Marin - Ispra Nuoto
  • Joseph Davide Natullo - Can Napoli
  • Fabio Scozzoli - Imolanuotoromagna - GS Esercito

Germany

  • Steffen Deibler - TG Biberach
  • Hendrik Feldwehr - SG Essen
  • Marco Koch - DSW 12 Darmstadt
  • Benjamin Starke - SG Neukölln
http://www.swimnews.com/News/view/7331

Even though Laszlo Cseh is not participating, the European team has quite a few swimmers that will be great in Ryan's usual events. Some of the European swimmers were familiar to me: James Goddard is one of the world's best IMers as are Luca Marin and Thomas Haffield. Liam Tancock and Christoper Walker-Hebborn are excellent backstrokers, and Steffen Deibler and Filippo Magnini are among the best freestyle sprinters in the world.

Other members of the team were new to me. I researched their names and learned that Michael Rock and Joseph Davide Natullo swim 100 & 200 butterfly and Robbie Renwick swims 200 free. Christian Galenda is a freestyle sprinter. Edoardo Giorgetti, Marco Koch, Hendrik Feldwehr and Fabio Scozzoli swim breaststroke. Benjamin Starke swims freestyle and butterfly.

I haven't heard if Ryan's knee has healed or if he has been swimming. Hopefully he will have enough time to get ready for this meet. It's only 3 weeks away.

US Short Course Nationals

The U.S. SC nationals will take place next weekend in Federal Way, Washington. The psych sheet has already been released and can be found here:

http://www.usaswimming.org/USASWeb/_Rainbow/Documents/23ccd32f-163f-4e73-baf7-f7c880408a5f/Psych%20Sheet_SCYNats.pdf

Ryan is not entered in any events, but neither is anyone from UF. It will be fun to see how well Tyler Clary can do. I've missed watching him swim.

400 IM finals today - Ryan 4th in prelims, Clary 1st, Cseh 2nd

The prelims for the 400 IM took place this morning in Rome. The 8 qualifiers for today's finals are:

1 CLARY Scott Tyler - 4:10.04
2 CSEH Laszlo - 4:10.33
3 KIS Gergo - 4:10.99
4 LOCHTE Ryan - 4:11.05
5 HAFFIELD Thomas - 4:11.32
6 NEVO Gal - 4:11.51
7 MARIN Luca - 4:12.66
8 PEREIRA Thiago - 4:13.05

Ryan finished first in his heat, ahead of Luca Marin and Thiago Pereira. Pereira led most of the way, until the last 100 when he was passed by Ryan and Marin. From the splits, it looks like Ryan took it easy on the middle 200. He'll be able to go a lot faster in the finals.

Ryan will be in lane 6 in the finals, with Clary in lane 4 and Cseh in lane 5. My prediction is Ryan will finish 1st, Cseh 2nd, Clary 3rd.

Interview with Laszlo Cseh (poorly translated from Hungarian)

http://74.125.67.132/translate_c?hl=en&sl=hu&u=http://www.origo.hu/sport/egyeb/uszas/20090721-interju-a-romai-vizes-vbre-keszulo-cseh-laszloval.html&prev=http://blogsearch.google.com/blogsearch%3Fhl%3Den%26ie%3DUTF-8%26scoring%3Dd%26q%3Dlaszlo%2Bcseh%26lr%3D%26sa%3DN&rurl=translate.google.com&usg=ALkJrhiYhIq6OnwYMABM-2fcY97MGWx61A
The translation is really bad, but it gives the gist of the questions Cseh was asked and his responses. Cseh now knows who Tyler Clary is! He will be competing against Clary in the 200 fly and the 400 IM and against Ryan in the 200 and 400 IM.
The article makes a big deal out of swimmingworldmagazine.com's prediction that Cseh will win the 400 IM. http://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/lane9/news/21730.asp?q=FINA%20World%20Championships%20Predictions
Others have predicted this result as well. I don't know why people think Ryan will come in second in the 400 IM...he's definitely going to win it...no stomach flu this time.
Here's an article from the Miami Herald about Ryan's preparations for the world championships. http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/other/story/1150176.html He says he hasn't trained for a world record (no mention of which event[s] he's referring to) but it is possible. I think world records are most likely in the 200 IM and 200 back. I don't see how anyone breaks Michael Phelps' world record in the 400 IM for a long, long time.

Interview at US nationals with Tyler Clary

Garrett McCaffrey, formerly of floswimming, interviewed Tyler Clary about his swims in the 200/400 IM and the 200 fly. The video can be found here (can't get it to embed):

He says a lot of interesting things about race strategy, particularly against Ryan in the IMs. Tyler is hoping to go 4:04 in the 400 IM in Rome!

Also, if anyone wants to follow Ryan Lochte on twitter, the address is http://twitter.com/ryanlochte. Hopefully he will be updating from Rome!

Ryan takes 1st place in 400 IM, Tyler Clary 2nd

Tyler Clary was so fast! He sliced 8 seconds from his personal best prior to this meet and 5 seconds from his prelim time. His breaststroke looked very good, so improved. His whole race was unbelievable. I was surprised to see Tyler pull away from Ryan in the backstroke. I know Tyler is a great backstroker, but Ryan is better.

Nevertheless, I thought Ryan swam a perfect race. He kept close to Tyler the whole way and then killed it in a devastating last turn. It was so fun to watch.

Fastest time in the world this year by 4 seconds and he did it in LZR legs. (Tyler was wearing a Jaked). Not bad. I think Ryan has a chance of breaking the WR in Rome.

Here's a breakdown of their splits:

Ryan: 25.70/29.72 (fly) 31.42/30.86 (back) 35.00/35.62 (breast) 29.40/28.68 (free)

Tyler
: 25.64/29.45 (fly) 31.03/30.02 (back) 35.06/36.29 (breast) 29.91/29.56 (free)

Ryan won the race in the last 50, but Tyler's breaststroke really held up. Such a fun race to watch.

Here is link to a video of the race from swimnetwork.com:

Thanks to Yahoo Olympics for the photos.

Finally, here's a really nice article about tonight's race (and the 400IM in general) from the NY Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/08/sports/08swim.html?ref=sports

Prelims of 400IM - US nationals

As anticipated, Ryan swam the prelims of the 400m IM today. He finished first in his heat and second overall with a time of 4:15.63. Tyler Clary was 1st with a blistering time of 4:11.29, swimming in a different heat than Ryan. Ryan was wearing legs (presumably LZR) and Tyler was reportedly wearing a Jaked. Ryan was really not pushed in his heat, finishing 5 seconds ahead of Andrew Gemmell. Tyler also was not pushed finishing almost 7 seconds ahead of Jack Brown.

Tonight's finals are going to be very interesting! I hope Tyler and Ryan can push each other to some great times. Can't wait for Gold Medal Mel's pre-finals report starting at 5:30 p.m. EDT at http://www.universalsports.com/

Results for the 400 IM prelims can be found here:
http://www.omegatiming.com/swimming/racearchives/2009/Indy2009/C74A_ResSummary_6_Heats_Men_400_Medley.pdf

Results for all of today's prelim races can be found here: http://www.omegatiming.com/swimming/racearchives/2009/Indy2009/index.htm

This photo is from this morning's 400 IM prelims. Thanks to the Daily Reezy for finding it so quickly.

In a sad note, Garrett McCaffrey announced today that he has left flowswimming.org, one of my favorite swimming websites. For a new fan like me, the interviews and content he provided were largely unparalleled, especially regarding the technical aspect of swimming. I learned so much about the sport by watching his long interviews, particularly interviews with coaches. I hope he continues with the sport and finds another similar position.

U.S. Nationals - Start in exactly one month!!

Here is the schedule of events that Ryan may swim:

Tuesday - July 7, 2009

400 IM (prelims and finals) - Event 6

Wednesday - July 8, 2009

200 free (prelims and finals) - Event 9
100 back (prelims and finals) - Event 10

Thursday - July 9, 2009

nothing

Friday - July 10, 2009

100 free (prelims and finals) - Event 20
200 IM (prelims and finals) - Event 22

Saturday - July 11, 2009

200 back (prelims and finals) - Event 27
Ryan can potentially qualify in 6 individual events, but I think it will likely be 5, with him qualifying either in the 200 free or the 100 back but not both. It's really too bad that Ryan will likely have double events on Wednesday and Friday and nothing on Thursday. At least the day off in the middle will allow him to rest up for the 2nd half of the meet.

I really hope Ryan swims the 400 IM. I still think he and Tyler Clary can go 1-2 at the world championships, particularly since Laci Cseh has not swam this event all year.

Charlotte Ultraswim Prelims Sunday 5/17/09

Here's a photo of Michael Phelps and Ryan at the Ultraswim that was posted on Floswimming.org. Thanks to Caroline for pointing it out.

Ryan swam the 200m IM this morning, finishing 1st in his heat and 8th overall with a time of 2:06.76. Ryan scratched his other two events - the 200m back and 100m free.

This has been a tough meet for Ryan and I think he knew it would be tough going in. Based on what the commentators have been saying during the finals, Ryan is in hard training and his body is worn out. I give him credit for going to Charlotte and trying to compete. It had to be difficult for him knowing that he was tired and probably would not do well but that peoples' expectations would nevertheless be high. Plus he knew a ton of media attention would be focused on this meet given Phelps' return. I'm sure he wanted to do well but knew the limitations he was facing given his training.

Someone in the press finally asked Ryan about Ryosuke Irie breaking his world record in the 200m back. Ryan said this:

Beijing Olympic champion Ryan Lochte lost his 200 backstroke world record a week ago to Japan's Ryosuke Irie.

"Records are made to be broken. Hopefully I will get it back," Lochte said. "I'm not too familiar with him. I'm just going to have to study. I know there is a lot more that I can still do so we will see."

Lochte wears simple briefs and sees no disadvantage.

"I still don't feel like I'm at a disadvantage," he said. "It's just crazy this technology, how far it has gone."

I'm still wondering if Speedo is going to come out with a suit to compete with the new suits from Arena and Jaked and if those new suits will be approved by FINA.

The source article can be found here: http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5jeip_aZ7agyMKn6q7VNgIeRlbJRw

I will not be shocked if Ryan's meet is over. He may swim the finals of the 200 IM tonight, but he may skip it altogether. I'm not surprised that Ryan scratched the 200 back either. It's his best event and his WR was just broken last week. If he didn't feel good in the water, why swim it and risk a poor result. This was not the time or the place to do it.

Tyler Clary continued to have a good meet. He placed 3rd in the 200IM prelims with a time of 2:05.24 and he set a meet record in the 200m back prelims, finishing 1st with a time of 1:59.14. Even though Ryan will not be swimming in the 200 back finals, it will be a great race with Clary, Marco Loughran, Aaron Peirsol and Nick Thoman.

Ultraswim Finals - 100m back and 400m free (+ 200m fly)

Happy because I found another photo of Ryan at Ultraswim. A total of 2!

Ryan swam in the 100m back A final tonight and the 400m free B final. He placed 4th in the back and 3rd in the free. His 100 back time was 55.13 and his 400 free time was 4:01.53.

Neither time was near Ryan's best, but given the time of the season and the amount of training he is doing now, the times were good.

The 100 back race was really fun to watch. Aaron Peirsol finished first followed by Michael Phelps and Nick Thoman. These guys were all wearing "fast" suits whereas Ryan wore the old fashioned speedo. I don't think a fast suit would have helped Ryan win, but he may have gone sub-55.

I watched an interesting video on flowswimming.org of Patrick Murphy, age 17, who tied Ryan in the 100 back prelims. Patrick Murphy swam 10,000 meters in practice between prelims and finals! That's how hard these guys are training right now, Ryan included.

The video of Patrick Murphy, who ultimately finished 6th in the finals of the 100 back, can be watched here:

Tyler Clary had a great night. He came in 2nd in the A final of the 400m free with a time of 3:55.06, which qualified him for the world championship trials. Tyler also finished 5th in the A final of the 200 fly with a time of 2:01.74. He also qualified for the world championship trials in this event.

The announcers said tonight that the Club Wolverine team just finished altitude training. Tyler is having a great meet.

Finally, it was fun to watch Marco Loughran of University of Florida/UK win the 100 back B final by .02. Marco has his world championship trials coming up in Scotland in a few weeks and hopefully he will win the 100 back there.

Charlotte Ultraswim Prelims Saturday 5/16/09

The photo is from Universalsports.com, which had about 50 photos of Phelps at the Ultraswim and 1 photo of Lochte. Sigh.

Ryan swam in the prelims for the 100m back and 400m free today. In the 100 back he finished tied for 5th with a time of 55.98. He'll be in the A final tonight with Peirsol, Phelps, Thoman, and Hesen. It's going to be a great race to watch.

In the 400m free, Ryan finished 15th and will swim in the B final. His time was 4:03.33.

Tyler Clary scratched the 100 back and swam the 400 free. He finished 2nd with a time of 3:56.77. He will be battling PVK and 3 other Club Wolverine teammates in the A final tonight.

200 Free Finals - Charlotte Ultra Swim (+ 400 IM)

Ryan placed 1st in the "B" final with a time of 1:50.58. Michael Phelps won the "A" final with a time of 1:46.02. PVK was second with a time of 1:46.71.

Ryan was wearing a old-fashioned speedo brief whereas it looked like the other swimmers were in fast suits. Rowdy Gaines said Ryan is in hard training right now. He looked super tired at the end of his race, but he dug down and won which was really fun to watch.

Tyler Clary placed 8th in the "A" final with a time of 1:52.13, a little slower than he swam in the prelims but not much. He may be conserving for the 400IM later tonight.

ETA: Tyler Clary placed 2nd in the 400 IM. He struggled during the breaststroke and then ran out of gas at the end. Thiago Pereira won and looked really strong, even his freestyle which I've noticed in the past is his worst stroke. Thiago said afterward that he broke his arm 5 weeks ago. He made quite a recovery!

I wish Ryan had not scratched the 400 IM, but he clearly wasn't feeling it today. He looked pretty tired. Better to save it up for the 100 back tomorrow.

Charlotte Ultraswim Prelims Friday 5/15/09

Ryan was scheduled to swim in the 200m free and 400m IM today.

Ryan finished 12th in the 200 free and qualified for the "B" final tonight. His time was 1:52.85. It's disappointing that he won't be in the "A" final with Phelps, PVK, Peirsol, etc.

Ryan scratched the 400m IM. Hope everything is OK. Maybe he was having an off day.

Tyler Clary swam very well, finishing 1st in the prelims in the 400IM and 7th in the 200 free. He'll be in both "A" finals tonight.

The swimnetwork.com live feed was a huge failure. The site crashed about mid-way through the men's 200 free heats and I (and numerous others) were unable to see later heats or any of the later events. Hopefully they will get their act together for tomorrow's prelims.

Tyler Clary Article - events he plans to enter at U.S. nationals

According to an article in the Riverside (CA) Press-Enterprise, Tyler Clary plans to enter the following events at U.S. Nationals:

200- and 400-meter IM, the 200 and 400 free, the 100 backstroke and the 200 butterfly.

At first I was surprised the 200 back was not included, but then assumed Tyler wants to avoid the dreaded "Lochte double" of 200IM/200back. Can't blame him for that.

I'm wondering if Tyler will change his mind about swimming the 200m IM over the 200m back. He came in 3rd in the 200m back at the 2008 U.S. Olympic trials behind Ryan and Aaron Peirsol. Nobody really knows the kind of shape Peirsol is in, although it should become clear before July. Tyler may have a good shot at the #2 spot in that event behind Ryan.

Michael Phelps may swim the 200m IM along with Ryan and Eric Shanteau. All three of those swimmers would likely finish ahead of Tyler.

I wonder how Ryan feels about swimming both the 200 back and 200 IM in 2009. He did such a great job at the Olympic trials and the Olympics. It was one of the most impressive feats in all of swimming in 2008.

The fact that 200 back and 200 IM will be on the same day at the 2009 World Championships will present Tyler (and Ryan) with some difficult decisions. Interestingly, Tyler has indicated he will swim 100m back and 200m free, which are also set for the same day. Whether to swim both of those event or focus on one will present a difficult decision for Ryan as well.

A link to the article is posted below.

USA Swimming article refers to Tyler Clary as "the next Ryan Lochte or Michael Phelps"

I am a big fan of Tyler Clary. This article shows he has worked very hard, particularly in the past year, and he has begun to realize his potential. I hope Tyler qualifies for Rome and I look forward to watching him swim for years to come.

Nevertheless, I don't think the real Ryan Lochte is anywhere near finished with his career, and I think he also will continue to improve and achieve great things. Ryan has shown no signs of slowing down after the Olympics, particularly in the IMs and the 200m back, and he is the guy to beat in the U.S., especially if Michael Phelps does not swim those events.

I'd love to see both Tyler and Ryan compete in the 400m IM in Rome. There's a chance they could also both make the U.S. team in the 200m back, but there are several other very stong contenders in that event, including not only Michael Phelps but also Aaron Peirsol.
Tyler's emergence as a great swimmer in all of Ryan's events is a huge benefit to Ryan for the same reason Ryan's emergence was good for Michael Phelps. These guys thrive on competition and racing. The U.S. Trials in July are going to be amazing for swimming fans and Tyler and Ryan will be a huge part of that. I hope they push each other to great times in the 400m IM and 200m back.

The announcers on ESPN360 said Tyler's best time in this event a
year ago was 1:42, which means he took more than 4 seconds off his
time in one year. That take hard work and dedication.

Congrats also to Jake Tapp and Omar Pinzon for their 2nd and
3rd place finishes. Rex Tullius of Florida finished first in the
consolation final and had a great time that was the 6th fastest overall.

Aaron Peirsol handed out the awards, which is very cool.

I'll add the video when it becomes available.

Great meet for Tyler Clary!! He has to be feeling very confident
going into the summer.

ETA: Big congratulations to Shaune Fraser of Florida who took first
in the 200y free and 200y fly. He broke the NCAA record in the
200y fly. Fraser also broke the Florida school records in both
events, which were previously held by Ryan Lochte.

A lot of Ryan's records were broken during this meet....NCAA records, meet records,
school records. He still has three American records - 200y IM, 200y back and
100y back. He has one NCAA record in the 100y back.

Like I said before, I doubt if Ryan cares too much about his NCAA records
being broken. There's nothing he can do about them given that he's done
with school and I'm sure he's excited about the new competition. Tyler
Clary is going to be great racing competition this summer in all of Ryan's
best events. That has to get the competitive juices flowing.

Floswimming.com Interviews with/about Tyler Clary at the NCAA Championships

I could not get these videos to embed, but they are well worth watching. Lots of really good questions and interesting answers.

Floswimming.com interview with Tyler Clary after he broke the American record in the 400y IM. He seemed surprised that he broke the record, but it certainly was his goal. He said it a couple of times before today, including in the video just below this one. Tyler said Michael Phelps congratulated him by text after the race and wished him luck for the rest of the meet. That must have been a thrill.

Flowswimming.com interview with Jon Urbanchek, Tyler Clary's coach at Michigan and also a U.S. National team coach. He believes Tyler can qualify for Worlds in the 400 IM this summer (he said MP is done with the event and alluded that Ryan may be done with it too). I hope Ryan will swim it one last time and qualify along with Tyler. I do not know if Laci Cseh is going to swim the 400 IM any longer. It's a wide open event.

NCAA Championships - 400y IM - Tyler Clary sets new American record - 3:35.98!!! Video added

When Tyler Clary said he was hoping to break Michael Phelp's American record in the 400y IM, I thought he could do it, but never thought he would break 3:36. He did and it was amazing. 3:35.98! That's fast.

Ryan's fastest time in this event, which happened after he finished college, is 3:37.88 (2007). Micheal Phelps' best time is 3:36.26 (2006). I'd love to see the three of them swim this event together. It probably will not happen, because MP may not swim it again and Ryan seems to have also given it up (at least in SCY). Still, it would be great for swimming if they did.

Congratulations Tyler! I'll add the video once it becomes available.

Congratulations also to Gal Nevo and Bradley Ally who took 2nd and 3rd with great times as well.

NCAA Meet - 400y IM Prelim Results - Tyler Clary 3:38.16!

Tyler came within .01 of of Ryan's NCAA meet record - in the prelims. The finals are going to be amazing. Tyler told swimmingworldmagazine.com that he's going after MP's American record. I think he can do it - he just needs to go a little faster in the breaststroke. Bradley Ally had a great swim in the prelims too.
