Here's what Gold Medal Mel says about Nationals and Ryan Lochte

His full analysis of Nationals can be found here:

http://www.goldmedalmel.typepad.com/mel/2010/07/i-used-to-be-a-swim-geeki-dont-know-when-swimmers-began-using-the-swim-geek-moniker-for-themselves-for-the-ones-who-ate.html

Here's what he had to say about Ryan:

"Lochte's suffered knee surgery and now a groin injury, but doesn't he always suffer something? Isn't this par for the course, and if so, given Lochte's history, should we even consider his injuries?

Lochte may face-off with Phelps in the 200 IM, and I DO KNOW for a fact that Lochte's breaststroke is weak. Long months elapsed this season without practicing one breaststroke kick because of his recuperating knee. Then again, Lochte popped a 1:59 at Sectionals in Florida. Maybe he has buffed up his fly and his free."

Swimmingworld.tv Split Time Predictions for Nationals

John Lohn and Garrett McCaffrey of Swimmingworld Magazine pick Ryan to make the Pan Pacs team in the 100/200 free 200 back and 200/400 IM (if he swims them)

Psych Sheet - US Nationals - Ryan's events

http://www.usaswimming.org/_Rainbow/Documents/ef60c2d9-4772-450f-a575-ab3ffb577181/Psych_CP%20Nationals.pdf

The psyche sheet for U.S. Nationals has been posted (see link above) and true to his word Ryan is entered in just about everything. He is entered in 9 events:

50 free
100 free
200 free
400 free
100 back
200 back
100 fly
200 IM
400 IM

Ryan said in his recent interview with swimmingworld.tv that he entered in a number of events and will not swim all of them. Because of his groin injury, Ryan will pick and choose which events work best for him at the meet.

I would expect if his injury is healed he will swim the same events as last year: 200 free, 200 back, 200 IM & 400 IM with 100 free in the prelims to qualify for the relay. Starting to get excited! Nationals start next Tuesday, August 3.

Sports Illustrated Article on Ryan Lochte, Nationals, the IMs and his injuries

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1172532/index.htm

By KELLI ANDERSON - August 2, 2010 edition

Seven of the last nine times that Michael Phelps has won an Olympic, world or Pan Pacific gold medal in the 200- or 400-meter individual medley, Ryan Lochte has been on the podium with him, getting the silver or bronze, a superb medleyist with the bad luck to share the era with the greatest of all time. When Phelps took a break from the IMs after the Beijing Olympics, Lochte finally broke from his shadow, winning both events at the worlds in Rome last summer.

Now, two years out from the 2012 London Games, Lochte's hold on those events is being tested by a raft of challenges. The U.S. nationals, which start on Aug. 3 in Irvine, Calif., will be a critical measure of his ability to fend them off.

One challenge comes from Phelps, the world-record holder in both IMs, who is back in the medley mix. While the 400 IM remains "off the table right now," according to his coach, Bob Bowman, the 200 IM is again on his program. (At a meet in Charlotte in May, Phelps swam 1:58.35, the second-fastest time in the world this year. Lochte's best so far is 1:59.35.) Even without Phelps in the 400 IM, Lochte will have to hold off Michigan's Tyler Clary, the silver medalist at worlds last year and the American short-course record holder.

But Lochte's most immediate concern is his health. In October he underwent surgery to repair the meniscus he tore in his left knee while break dancing in his Gainesville, Fla., apartment, the latest in a string of freak accidents that have plagued him over the last few years. (Five weeks before the 2007 worlds he fell off his scooter and fractured his right foot; a month before the '08 Olympic trials he severely twisted his left ankle while chasing his Doberman puppy.) The meniscus injury kept Lochte out of the pool for a month and away from a full breaststroke kick for four more. "I don't want to take the chance of blowing my knee again," he says.

When Lochte started swimming a full breaststroke again in early May, he looked so strong that his coach, Gregg Troy, put the medleys back on his agenda for nationals—until mid-July, when Lochte re-tweaked a groin muscle, again hindering his breaststroke kick. "It makes [the IMs] a little iffy," says Troy of Lochte's program for the Irvine meet. "We're taking it day by day."

Bowman says the absence of Phelps or Lochte or both from medley races would be "a great opportunity for other people to step up." For Lochte, who turns 26 on Aug. 3 and has never beaten Phelps in a long-course medley, it would be a missed opportunity to prove that he deserves to remain on top.

Ryan & Speedo introducing new shoe line on August 3

I like to keep this blog mostly about swimming, but nevertheless wanted to mention that Ryan has teamed with Speedo to design a shoe line. The new shoe will be introduced on August 3, the first day of US Nationals.

Here is a link to a video released by Speedo about the shoe. It will not embed.

Ryan's possible events at Nationals - Aug 3-7

Psych sheets are not out yet, but in his interview with swimmingworld.tv, Ryan previewed the events he may swim at Nationals, depending on if his groin injury has healed. Here are the events he mentioned and the dates they will be swum. For all events, prelims begin at 9 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.

Tuesday August 3, 2010

Event 2 - 400 free
Event 6 - 400 IM

Ryan obviously will not swim both of these events. He said in the interview that if his groin is better he will swim the 400 IM. If not he will swim the 400 free.

Wednesday August 4, 2010

Event 9 - 200 free
Event 10 - 100 back

Ryan said he will swim the 100 back if he cannot swim the 200 IM. Given that these events are back to back, it would be difficult for anyone to place in the top two of both. Maybe he will swim the 200 free in the prelims only, putting up a time fast enough to qualify for the 800 free relay, and then swim the 100 back in both the prelims and finals. The 100 back has the deepest and most challenging field but Ryan has never backed down from a challenge.

Thursday August 5, 2010

Day off

Friday August 6, 2010

Event 20 - 100 free
Event 22 - 200 IM

Last year Ryan swam the 100 free in the prelims only, putting up the second fastest time in the meet and qualifying for the 400 free relay. I hope he will do that again this year as it was so much fun to see him on that relay. I also hope his groin is healed enough to compete in the 200 IM, the event where he holds the world record. Michael Phelps may also swim the 200 IM this year. It would be so cool to see them race against each other in this event. This hasn't happened since Beijing!

The only other men's individual event on Friday is the 1500 free. I don't think Ryan would compete in that. If he can't swim the 200 IM, that leaves the 100 free.

Saturday August 7, 2010

Event 27 - 200 back

This is always one of Ryan's best events and his biggest hope for qualifying for Pan Pacs if he cannot swim the IMs.

Qualifying for 2010 Pan Pacs - August 18-23 in Irvine, CA

A comment on an earlier post about the qualifying rules for 2010 Pan Pacs and 2011 Worlds made me want to read the rules. The first qualifying rules I found were for the 2010 SC Nationals and I posted about them yesterday.

The USA Swimiming rules for qualifying for the 2010 Pan Pacs can be found here:

The qualifying meet for Pan Pacs is the U.S. Nationals also in Irvine from August 3-7. The team size is 26 swimmers for each gender.

According to the rules, here's how swimmers are selected for Pan Pacs:

Priority #1

The 4 fastest swimmers from the Finals of the 100m and 200m free and the fastest swimmer from the Finals of each event other than the 100m and 200m free.

Priority #2
The second fastest swimmer for each event other than the 100m and 200m free.

Priority #3
The third fastest swimmer for each event other than the 100m and 200m free.

Priority #4
The fourth fastest swimmer for each event other than the 100m and 200m free.

There are rules for how to reduce the team size if more than 26 swimmers from each gender qualify under priorities 1-4. Basically, if you qualify under priority 1 you are on the team. Your chances of qualifying lessen as the priority number increases. If you qualify under priority #4 only, you probably won't make the team.

Discretionary Selection - The coaches can choose any swimmer making the team to compete in the relays. The coaches cannot make a discretionary selection for non-relay events. If you did not qualify for an individual event under priority #1-4, you will not make the team.

Most interesting rule provision:

"All swimmers who are named to the Team through the selection process shall be eligible for entry into additional Events held at the Championships and to qualify for the 2011 World Championships, provided that the athlete swims at least one Event in which he/she qualifies. Only times from Finals (A & B) and Timed Final events at the Pan Pacific Championships will be used for selection to the World Championship Team."

This means that if a swimmer qualifies for the Pan Pacs in one event, he or she can swim in the prelims of any event at Pan Pacs. This means that at Pan Pacs, the U.S. is not limited to only two swimmers per event for the prelims. However, only two swimmers from each country can advance to the finals.

Ryan in the 2006 Pan Pacs

The unique selection rules for the Pan Pacs impacted Ryan in 2006. He finished 3rd in the 200m back at nationals (also in Irvine, CA in 2006!) behind Aaron Peirsol and Michael Phelps. Then he finished 2nd in the 200 IM, 2nd in the 400IM and 4th in the 200 free, so he qualified for Pan Pacs in those events.

Nevertheless, because a swimmer who qualifies for Pan Pacs in one event can swim the prelims in any event, Ryan swam in the prelims for the 100 free, 100 back and 200 back in addition to the 200 IM, an event he qualified for at nationals.

Ryan finished 1st in the prelims for the 100 back and 2nd in the finals. This is how he qualified for the 2007 Worlds in the 100 back even though he didn't swim it at nationals. Ryan also qualified for the finals in the 200 back at Pan Pacs by finishing fourth. Aaron Peirsol and Michael Phelps finished 1-2 in the prelims and therefore, because each country can put only two swimmers in the finals, Ryan could not advance. Ryan ended up swimming and winning the 200 back at 2007 Worlds after Michael Phelps dropped that race.

For the 400 IM, Ryan qualified for Pan Pacs by finishing second at nationals but elected not to swim it. Robert Margalis finished fourth at nationals, but swam the 400 IM at Pan Pacs and finished second behind Michael Phelps. Ryan and Michael ended up swimming the 400 IM at 2007 Worlds. I think it is because Ryan's time finishing second at nats (4:11.53) was faster than Margalis' time finishing second at Pan Pacs (4:13.85).

It will be interesting to see if any of these scenarios play out in 2010-11.

Qualifying for 2010 Short Course Words - Dubai December 15-19, 2010

The 2010 Short Course Worlds will be held on December 15-19, 2010 in Dubai. I'm really hopeful to be able to watch Ryan compete in an international short course meet. How can he qualify?

The USA Swimming selection criteria are posted here:

http://www.usaswimming.org/_Rainbow/Documents/1d86d0b1-4811-43a8-ab16-889f01778cf4/USAS%202010%20SCWC%20selection%20Criteria_v3.pdf

"Qualifying Competitions" are defined as "the 2010 ConocoPhillips National Championships to be conducted August 3-7, 2010, and the Pan Pacific Championships August 18-21, 2010, both in Irvine, CA."

The team will be announced on October 1, 2010.

The size of the team is limited to 26 swimmers per gender.

The team is selected according to the following priorities:

Priority #1
  • The four fastest swimmers from the Qualifying Competitions for the 100m & 200m free
  • The fastest swimmer from every event other than 100m & 200m free

Priority #2

  • The second fastest swimmer in every event other than 100m & 200m free

There are a bunch of rules about how the team is to be decreased if the swimmers qualifying under both Priorty #1 and Priority #2 equal more than 26 per gender. There are also a bunch of other rules about tie-breakers. There are even more rules about what happens if a swimmer selected to the team decides not to swim a particular event.

The bottom line is the upcoming Long Course Nationals & Pan Pacs in Iriving essentially will determine who qualifies for Short Course Worlds. I would have thought the 2010 AT&T Short Course Nationals to be held in Columbus, OH on December 2-4, 2010 would be the qualifying meet, but it is not.

Full Ryan Lochte Interview on Swimmingworld.tv

I really hope his pulled groin heals quickly and Ryan can swim the 200 and 400 IMs. If he can't, then he's going to swim the 400 free and the 100 back. Sounds like he is going to swim the 200 back, 200 free and 100 free no matter what. Pretty much the same lineup of events from 2009 Nationals.

Ryan injured??!!

Ryan had a groin injury a few days ago and cannot swim breaststroke. He may not be able to compete in the IMs at nationals. If he misses the IMs there are still lots of events he can swim, but the IMs are my favorite!

I really hope he's OK. It would be a shame if he is precluded from swimming the IMs at 2011 worlds if he can't compete at this year's nationals. Not really sure how that works.

Here's the link to the article a short clip from his interview with swimmingworld.tv:

The full interview will be posted on Friday.

Speedo Sectionals prelim results - Friday, July 9

Ryan swam the 400 IM! He finished first in the prelims in that event and also first in the 200 free.

Hope his injured knee held up OK. Here are the prelim results:

http://www.floridaswimming.org/szfllsc/__eventform__/96525_sectionals%20friday%20prelims.pdf

200 free - 1:50.15
400 IM - 4:26.97

Interestingly, Ryan's time in the finals of the 400 IM at the 2009 Santa Clara GP was 4:18.62. It's an interesting comparison because last year's Santa Clara GP was held 3 weeks before Nationals just like this weekend's meet. I don't know if Ryan swam the 400 IM in tonight's finals (I doubt it) but it would be interesting to see if he could get closer to 4:18.

I'm also watching with interest the results of the Los Angeles Grand Prix and will report some results from that meet as well.
