Ryan's possible events at Nationals - Aug 3-7

Psych sheets are not out yet, but in his interview with swimmingworld.tv, Ryan previewed the events he may swim at Nationals, depending on if his groin injury has healed. Here are the events he mentioned and the dates they will be swum. For all events, prelims begin at 9 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.

Event 2 - 400 free
Event 6 - 400 IM

Ryan obviously will not swim both of these events. He said in the interview that if his groin is better he will swim the 400 IM. If not he will swim the 400 free.

Event 9 - 200 free
Event 10 - 100 back

Ryan said he will swim the 100 back if he cannot swim the 200 IM. Given that these events are back to back, it would be difficult for anyone to place in the top two of both. Maybe he will swim the 200 free in the prelims only, putting up a time fast enough to qualify for the 800 free relay, and then swim the 100 back in both the prelims and finals. The 100 back has the deepest and most challenging field but Ryan has never backed down from a challenge.

Day off

Friday August 6, 2010

Event 20 - 100 free
Event 22 - 200 IM

Last year Ryan swam the 100 free in the prelims only, putting up the second fastest time in the meet and qualifying for the 400 free relay. I hope he will do that again this year as it was so much fun to see him on that relay. I also hope his groin is healed enough to compete in the 200 IM, the event where he holds the world record. Michael Phelps may also swim the 200 IM this year. It would be so cool to see them race against each other in this event. This hasn't happened since Beijing!

The only other men's individual event on Friday is the 1500 free. I don't think Ryan would compete in that. If he can't swim the 200 IM, that leaves the 100 free.

Event 27 - 200 back

This is always one of Ryan's best events and his biggest hope for qualifying for Pan Pacs if he cannot swim the IMs.
