Ryan in "C" Final for 100m breast at Nationals

Ryan placed 4th in 100m breast and 1st in 100m fly at Friday's Speedo South Sectionals. Here are the results:

Santa Clara Grand Prix - June 11 Finals - 400IM and 100 breast

400IM Finals

First the good news....Ryan finished 1st in the 400 IM in a very exciting race. Here's a link to the video on swimnetwork.com. http://www.swimnetwork.com/videos/v/20090612/santa_clara_men_s_400m_im_a_final-16671.html Robert Margalis came in 2nd. Ryan's time was 4:18.62 and Margalis' time was 4:18.84. It was very close at the end.

It was an exciting race, but the times weren't that great. 4:18 doesn't make the top 25 times in the world this year.

100 Breast Finals

Ryan won the B final in the 100 breast, but was disqualified. The video does not say why Ryan was DQ'd and I have not yet been able to figure out the reason.

In his post-race interview following the 400IM, Ryan said he is not swimming the 50 free tomorrow. Good move! He needs to conserve energy for the 200 back and 100 fly.

One other interesting note....Ryan was wearing an old fashioned speedo in the 400IM final and everyone else was wearing a fast suit. I love it.

Prelims of 100 breast and 400IM at Santa Clara Grand Prix

Today at the Santa Clara Grand Prix Ryan swam in the prelims for the 100 breast and the 400 IM. He was seeded 11th in the 100 breast and 1st in the 400IM. The meet setup has 9 swimmers in each heat. Thus, the swimmers with the top 9 times in prelims make the A finals, the next 9 make the B finals and the next 9 make the C finals.

100 Breast Prelim

Ryan finished 10th in the 100 breast with a time of 1:04.49, qualifying for the B final. Ryan missed the A final by only .04. Not bad for an event not considered one of his best.

400 IM Prelim

Ryan finished 3rd in the 400Im with a time of 4:23.79, qualifying for the A final. Robert Margalis was the top qualifyer with a time of 4:23.50 and Jordan Hartney of Canada qualified 2nd with a time of 4:23.66.

Speedo South Spring Sectionals - Finals Results 3/20/09

200m Free
Ryan came in 1st with a time of 1:48.17.

This time is really good given that both the British and Australian Nationals were won with times of 1:46 and I assume those swimmers were at least partially rested, shaved, wearing a fast suit, etc. whereas Ryan was not.

100m Breast
Ryan came in 2nd with a time of 1:03.24. Vlad Polyakov came in first with a time of 1:02.66.

Even though 100 breast is not Ryan's event, I have to think he was not happy to come in 2nd.

200m Free

Ryan placed 1st in the prelims with a time of 1:52.38.

100m Breast

Ryan placed 3rd in the prelims with a time of 1:07.58

Ryan did not swim in the 100m Fly.

The finals for the 200m Free will begin at approximately 5:10 p.m. EDT today and finals for the 100m Breast will begin at approximately 5:27 p.m. That's not a lot of time in between events.
