Minneapolis GP - Ryan's Friday prelim results

The results are for the A prelims only. Conceivably someone could swim faster in the B prelims and change the finals, but it is not likely.

200m free - Ryan qualified 12th to make the B final of the 200m free. His time was 1:51.37. Ryan must be pretty beat up from training because his training partners - who are all top notch 200 free swimmers - were even slower. Conor Dwyer finished 15th with a 1:51.70. Shaune Frazier was 17th with a 1:52.10. Robert Gomez was 25th with a 1:53.26. Sebastien Rousseau was 30th with a 1:54.26 and Peter Vanderkaay was 38th with a 1:55.49.

100m fly - Ryan qualified 8th to make the A final of the 100m fly. His time was 54.85.

It's disappointing not to make the A final of the 200 free, especially with so many Olympic stars in this event. Nevertheless, Ryan is in hard training now and one thing I've learned over the years is not to expect too much at the early GP meets.

Santa Clara GP - Ryan 8th in the 100m free and 8th in the 100m fly

Ryan was 8th in the 100m free with a time of 50.63, faster than his prelim time of 50.78. Taehwan Park won with a time of 48.92.

Ryan also finished 8th in the 100m fly with a time of 54.55. Michael Phelps was first in 52.41

Tomorrow is the 400m IM. It will be interesting to see how Ryan's knee holds up. Fingers crossed.

Michigan Grand Prix Results - Friday finals/Saturday prelims

Friday Finals

200m free

Ryan finished second to Michael Phelps and it was so close!! I didn't get to see the race, but from what I read, Ryan was ahead after the last turn, but MP had a very strong finish.

Let's look at the splits:

Michael Phelps: 25.48 52.76 (27.28) 1:20.97 (28.21) 1:48.45 (27.48)

Ryan Lochte: 25.38 52.70 (27.32) 1:20.52 (27.82) 1:48.69 (28.17)

It would have been nice to see Ryan win this close race, but I don't think it is cause for concern that he didn't. The last lap times show Ryan is tired. I still think he's injured in some way. The fact that he's swimming this well despite his physical condition is amazing. When world championships come in July, he will be rested and his last lap will not be his slowest time.

100m fly

Ryan won the "B" final in this event with a time of 54.27, out touching Simon Burnett by .01. It's always good to see a close win, even if it is in the "B" final.

Saturday Prelims

200m fly

Ryan qualified for lane 8 (the last spot) in the "C" final with a time of 2:06.77. Yikes!! He would have needed to swim 5 seconds faster - better than a 2:01.83 - to make the "A" final. I'm going to have to look up Ryan's times in this event, but I believe he's swum it much faster in the past, even in prelims. Hope everything is OK.

100m back

Ryan rebounded nicely in the 100m back, winning his heat and qualifying for the "A" final with the 4th fastest time in the prelims. Tonight's finals should be fun to watch. The top 4 qualifiers are:

V. Janusaitis - 56.02

Ryan Lochte - 56.11

David Nolan is a high school senior and only 18 years old. He swam in the same heat as MP in the prelims and pushed him hard. Very impressive! I can't wait to see this race tonight.

Indy Grand Prix - Day 1 results

The Indy Grand Prix started Thursday and there were some absolutely incredible swims by Michael Phelps, Ous Mellouli and Tyler Clary. I still cannot believe how fast Mellouli and Clary were in the 400m IM, 4:13.80 and 4:14.80 respectively. Those would be fast times for Worlds. Unbelievable.

MP had some super fast times too with a 1:46.27 (seriously? in March?) to win the 200m free and a 51.75 to win the 100m fly. Incredible.

On to Ryan's races.

200m free
Ryan qualified for the "A" final, and finished 4th with a time of 1:49.41. I thought he was going to get 3rd, but he was just touched out by Dom Meichtry. Mellouli took 2nd. Ryan has to be really happy with that swim because it was under 1:50 and almost as good as the 1:49.25 he swam in the Austin GP.

100m fly
Ryan qualified for the "B" final and finished 4th with a time of 53.92. That's not a bad time given it's not one of his main events.

Austin Grand Prix Results - Friday, Jan. 14

Ryan took first in the 200m free and second in the 100m fly on the first day of the Austin Grand Prix. Given that Ryan has been swimming upwards of 17,000 meters a day in training, these are excellent results. Oh yes and Ryan was the only swimmer wearing a speedo rather than jammers.

Ryan did well in Saturday's prelims, making the A finals in both the 100m fly and the 200m back and making the B final in the 50m free.  

In the 100 fly he finished 4th, with a time of 54.82.  The top 7 qualifiers in this event were within 1 second of each other.  It should be an exciting final.

Ryan also finished 4th in the 200 back, with a time of 2:02.57.  That's about what his prelim time was at the Ultraswim (I think), so that is pretty good.  It will be interesting to see how he does in the finals.

In the 50 free Ryan finished tied for 12th with a time of 23.68.  All of the top 18 qualifiers were very close and other than Nathan Adrian's 22.5, which was the fastest prelim time, only .78 seconds separates the 2nd fastest from the 18th fastest qualifier.

Santa Clara GP - Friday Finals & Saturday Prelims

Friday Finals - 200m Free

Ryan finished 4th in the 200m free with a time of 1:49.80.  Kendrick Monk of Australia placed first in 1:49.29, followed by Nimro Shapira Bar-Or in 2nd with a time of 1:49.33 and Ricky Berens in 3rd with a time of 1:49.44.  Close race.

Friday Finals - 200m Fly

Ryan placed 5th in the 200m fly with a time of 2:03.20.  In 1st was Ka Marcio De Almeida with a time of 1:56.94, 2nd was Stefan Hirniak with a time of 1:59.74, 3rd was David Mosko with a time of 2:00.79 and 4th was Mark Dylla with a time of 2:01.14.

Ryan will swim in the finals of the 200 free and 100 fly tonight. He qualified 3rd in the 200 free with a time of 1:50.79 and 5th in the 100 fly with a time of 55.09. Finals begin at 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time and can be watched live on http://www.universalsports.com/.

Speedo South Sectionals Results - Friday Finals & Saturday Prelims

In Friday's finals Ryan finished 1st in both of his events. The results were:

200m Free - 1:50.08
100m Fly - 55.42

Last year Ryan won the 200 free in 1:48.17. He was almost 2 seconds slower this year but had nobody to race. The 2nd place finisher was more than 2.5 seconds behind. Ryan didn't swim the 100 fly at the Speedo meet last year, but his time (55.42) is must slower than he swam in last year's Missouri GP.

In Saturday's prelims, Ryan had a false start in the 400m free and finished 1st in the 100m back with a time of 56.55. Last year at the Speedo meet Ryan won the 100 back with a time of 53.95, which was really fast. It will be interesting to see how he does in tonight's final.

Missouri Grand Prix - Prelim Results 2/12/10

The Missouri Grand Prix started today. Unfortunately Michael Phelps could not make it due to the blizzard on the east coast earlier this week. There are still a lot of Olympians there: Garrett Weber-Gale, Eric Shanteau, Ous Mellouli, Thiago Pereira and Ryan. Also, Nick Thoman from the national team is there.

Ryan swam the prelims for two events this morning, the 200m free and the 100m fly. He placed 4th in the 200m free and tied for 3rd in the 100m fly. Here are the results:

This is Ryan's first meet since last summer's world championships in Rome. For the sake of comparison, at last year's Missouri Grand Prix Ryan swam a 1:54.19 in the prelims of the 200 free and didn't make the "A" final. He swam a 55.08 in the 100 free and finished 2nd in the final. He seems to be on pace with his training from last year and we all know how well that turned out!

Santa Clara Grand Prix - June 12 Finals - 100m Fly & 200m Back

100m Fly

Ryan placed 2nd in the 100 Fly with a time of 52.84, his personal best in this event by .02! It's also exactly 1 second faster than the 53.84 he swam at the Missouri Grand Prix, the last time he swam this event. Ryan should be happy with this result.

Masayuki Kishida, who also came in first in the 100 fly in Missouri, won with a time of 52.43. Ricky Berens came in third with a time of 53.00.

I'm so happy for Ryan that he came in 2nd and swam a personal best time.

200 back

Because this is Ryan's best event, it is always nerve-wracking to watch him swim it. Tonight was no different. He was in 2nd place the entire race until the last 50 when he had a fantastic turn and shot out ahead of Ashley Delaney of Australia. As Rowdy Gains said about Ashley Delaney in the last lap, "It was like he was standing still." Ryan won with a time of 1:56.83, almost 2 seconds faster than Delaney.

Ryan said in the interview after the race that his coach wanted him to swim the last 50 in the same time he swam in Beijing. Obviously, I had to check to see if he did this....

Tonight's time in the last 50: 28.33

Beijing time in the last 50: 28.88

He actually went .55 faster than in Beijing. This is awesome. It suggests that Ryan was holding back in this event and could have gone much faster. I'm so much more excited for U.S. nationals now.

Santa Clara Grand Prix - June 12 Prelims - 100 Fly & 200 Back

100m Fly

Ryan finished fourth in the prelims of the 100m fly with a time of 53.62. Not bad considering he was seeded 8th before the meet.

The top 3 finishers were Jason Dunford with a time of 53.25, Tyler McGill with a time of 53.46 and Albert Subirats with a time of 53.55. Also making the A final was Ricky Berens with a time of 53.68 and Matt Grevers with a time of 53.97.

All of these times were very close. It's going to be an exciting final.

200m Back

Ryan also finished fourth in the prelims of the 200m back with a time of 2:02.99. This is more than 9 seconds slower than his fastest time. I know he can go a lot faster in this event.

Finishing 1st was David Russell with a time of 2:01.31, 2nd was Ashley Delaney of Australia with a time of 2:01.50 and 3rd was Matt Hawes with a time of 2:02.52. Also making the A final were Eugene Godsoe, Rex Tullius (Ryan's training partner at UF) and Brian Johns of Canada.

I'm thinking the final will be all about Ashley Delaney and Ryan. It's going to be exciting.
