Day 2 Prelims - Short Course Worlds
400 IM
Ryan is in heat 3/5, lane 4 for the prelims of the 400 IM. Here are the other swimmers in his heat, with lane assignments on the left:

USA is in Heat 2/2, lane 4. The Russians are in the same heat, lane 5. I do not think Ryan will swim in the prelims but he will definitely swim in the finals. I believe the other swimmers will be Peter Vanderkay, Ricky Berens and David Walters. I do not know who will swim the prelims in Ryan's place.

Pan Pacs - Day 2 Finals
2010 Pan Pacs Day 2: Live Finals Results, Recaps, and Analysis, As the Races Happen
I love the swimmerscircle blog. Please click on the link above for their wrap up of everything that happened today, including Ryan's two events the 400 IM and the 4 x 200 free relay. Ryan won gold in the 400 IM with a world-best time of 4:07.59. For the first 150m, Ryan was ahead of world-record pace. He slowed down quite a bit at the end when he knew he was going to win, probably because he knew he had to swim the relay shortly thereafter.
The 4 x 200 relay was swum by Michael Phelps, Peter Vanderkaay, Ricky Berens with Ryan taking the anchor leg. The time was 7:03.84. The silver and bronze were won by Japan and Australia respectively and they were more than 6 seconds behind. Ryan's split was 1:45.27, which is amazing given he just swam the 400 IM.
Tomorrow I will be going to Irvine to see the races in person! I'm really excited.

2010 Pan Pacs Day 2 Update: Phelps Fails to A-Final in 400 IM
Read about the prelims at theswimmerscircle.com. Ryan qualified first with a time of 4:08.77. Tyler Clary came in second with a time of 4:09.20. Ryan and Tyler swam in the same heat. Michael Phelps finished first in his heat but had the fourth fastest time overall with a 4:15.38. Because only the top two Americans qualify for the A final, MP will be relegated to the B final tonight.
The two fastest times from finals will make the 2011 Worlds team.

Notably, Ryan skipped the 100 free today. I'm not surprised as I think he swam the 100 free at Nationals to qualify for the relay. It would have been difficult to do well in the 400 IM if he swam the 100 free first. Ryan also has the 4 x 200 free relay tonight.

Ryan places 2nd in 200m free!
He was so close to winning. I thought he had it, but 2nd is very very good. Michael Phelps took first. Ryan has now qualified for two more events at Pan Pacs - the 200 free and the 800 free relay. Also qualifying for the relay was Peter Vanderkaay (3rd) and Ricky Berens (4th). This means the relay will have the same four who won gold in Beijing.

Interview with Ryan Lochte after 800 free relay & medal ceremonies
Ryan 3rd in 200 back, anchors 4 x 200 free relay to new world record!
Ryan placed 3rd in the 200 back with a time of 1:53.82, .11 seconds faster than his previous personal best in Beijing.
Aaron Peirsol won with a new WR time of 1:51.92. Ryosuke Irie was second in 1:52.51.
Ryan was in 1st after the first 100 and in a close 2nd after the 150 (and a full second ahead of Irie) 
but then he died in the last 50 with a time of 30.14. I will need to watch his interview after the race, but hope nothing bad happened. His legs just may have been really tired from yesterday.

Michael Phelps: 1:44.49
Ricky Berens: 1:44.13
Dave Walters: 1:45.47
Ryan Lochte: 1:44.46.
Ryan has now swum in 4 events and won 4 medals, 3 gold and 1 bronze. His last event is the 400 IM on Sunday. Hopefully he can place 1st and have the most successful long course meet of his life!

Ryan takes 3rd place in 200 free, qualifies for 4x200 free relay
Ryan dropped the 100 back to concentrate on the 200 free but unfortunately it did not turn out that well for him. He finished 3rd thus failing to qualify for the 200 free as an individual event. The good news is by finishing 3rd he assured himself a place on the 4 x 200 free relay, but I think that was a foregone conclusion anyway.
The top 6 finishers in the 200 free were:
Michael Phelps - 1:44.23
Dave Walters - 1:44.95
Ryan Lochte - 1:45.66
Ricky Berens - 1:45.73
PVK - 1:45.77
Davis Tarwater - 1:46.36
Ryan swam a little slower (.05) than his personal best from the 2008 Olympic trials, which had to be a little disappointing to him. It looked like Ryan slowed down a bit in the 3rd 50.

In other news, Tyler Clary continued his great meet by finishing 2nd in the 200 fly and qualifying for Rome. He dropped more than 3 seconds from his personal best in this event. All his hard work is paying off.

Ryan is not swimming in any events on Thursday but he has two events on Friday: 100 free and 200 IM.

Men's NCAA Div 1 Swimming Championships start today 3/26
Finally, the start of the NCAA Men's championships will arrive today. I feel like it's been forever since the conference meets and I'm really looking forward to several races, specifically the 200 IM, 200 back and 400 IM. (Go Tyler Clary!) I wonder if any of Ryan's NCAA records will be broken. I'll post results once received.
There are so many topics floating around in my head that I want to post about but work has been crazy and I don't have time to write. Hopefully there will be time to update more this weekend.
Here are videos of the 4 x 200m Free Relay from the 2005 World Championships. Ryan swam the second leg just as he did at the 2004 Olympics, the 2007 Worlds and the 2008 Olympics. It's fun to watch. Thanks to somexseptember at Daily Reezy for bringing these videos to our attention.
