Santa Clara Grand Prix - Sunday finals - Ryan placed 2nd in 100 back & 200 IM
100m back
Ryan didn't scratch and he came in 2nd! Still waiting for the results to show and I will put in the times.
Ryan finished 2nd to Tiago Pereira again, but his time was great for this time of the season: 1:58.99. Conor Dwyer finished 3rd. Here are the splits:

Michigan Grand Prix - 100m back results
Ryan placed second in the 100m back. His time was 54.81. Not bad!
Here were the top 3:
Michael Phelps: 54.15 (26.92)(27.23)
Ryan Lochte: 54.81 (26.92)(27.89)
David Nolan 55.10 (27.11)(27.99)
Very impressed with David Nolan, an 18 yr old who is going to Stanford next year. He really hung in there with MP & Ryan.
I know Nick Thoman, David Plummer and Matt Grevers weren't swimming at this GP, but it's good to see Ryan do so well in the 100 back. He has to be thinking of it as a possibility for Olympic trials.
p.s. I watched tonight's event live on facebook via Universalsports. I know it's a short event, but it was disappointing that the announcers (Rowdy Gaines & Paul Sunderland) didn't say much of anything about David Nolan and never said who finished 2nd and 3rd.

Austin Grand Prix Results - Saturday, Jan. 15
Ryan placed third in the 100m back and second in the "B" final of the 400m free. Although he didn't win, these are very good results given the amount of training he is doing right now.

Men's 100 backstroke
Michael Phelps hasn't had many victories in the 100 backstroke in his career, but he added one to his resume tonight with a 54.14 He took out the race hard and hit the wall at 50 meters in first place – an unusual spot for Phelps in a 100-meter race. Nick Thoman of SwimMAC-Carolina turned nearly even with Phelps at the halfway mark but couldn't match Phelps' closing speed, finishing second in 54.73. Ryan Lochte of Daytona Beach Swimming had a strong back half, but a slower first half meant he could only fight his way up to third place with a 54.95.
Men's 400 freestyle
Chip Peterson used the same strategy as his FAST teammate Kate Ziegler did in the women's race, staying at Michael Klueh's feet for 250 meters before making his move at 300 meters to win in 3:53.64. Klueh of Longhorn Aquatics did his best to regain the lead but touched the wall second in 3:53.73. Andrew Gemmell of Delaware Swim Team, who had competed in the 200 butterfly earlier, finished third in 3:57.30.
Ediz Yildirimer of The Woodlands Swim Team will have a great memory of the meet, as he chased down Ryan Lochte in the final 150 meters to take the B final in 3:59.37. Not only did Yildirimer get the win, but he improved on his lifetime best of 3:59.59 from last summer's junior nationals. Lochte had a five-second lead over Yildirimer at 200 meters, but was unable to match Yidirimer's closing speed – and final 50 split of 28.37. Lochte's time in the B final was 4:00.24.

Pan Pacs - Day 1 - 200 free and 100 back
Pan Pacs start today with prelims at 10 a.m. PDT and finals at 6 p.m. PDT.
Ryan is entered in the 200 free and 100 back on Day One. I hope he will swim both events but if he drops one, it is likely to be the 100 back.

Peter Vanderkaay, Ricky Berens and Tae Hwan Park will be in heat 4. I think Ryan's biggest challenge in the prelims will be to swim fast enough to qualify for finals. He doesn't have anyone who will really race him in his heat. Ryan has a good shot at winning this event, particularly because Michael Phelps decided to skip it.

This is a good opportunity for Ryan to qualify for 2011 worlds in the 100 back. The 100 back times at Nationals were kind of slow. The top 2 US swimmers at Pan Pacs are likely to be the ones who will be going to Shanghai in this event.

100 back and 200 free prelims today - Watch Ryan swim against Michael Phelps
My guess is Ryan will scratch the 100 back and concentrate on the 200 free. The 100 back, whether Ryan competes or not, will be one of the most exciting races of the whole meet because the field is so deep. Aaron Peirsol, Nick Thoman and Matt Grevers would probably finish 1-2-3 if the Olympics were held today (and if 3 swimmers from the US could compete).

2006 Short Course World Championships in Shanghai - 3 WRs not 2
In the post below where I go through Ryan's accomplishments at big international meets, I missed one of his world records at the 2006 Short Course World Championships in Shanghai. The WR was in the 100m Back and happened in the first leg of the 4 x 100m Medley Relay. The team went on to win a silver, but Ryan's time of 49.99 in the backstroke leg was a world record.
This means Ryan has set 12 world records not 11.

Speedo South Sectionals Results - Friday Finals & Saturday Prelims
In Friday's finals Ryan finished 1st in both of his events. The results were:
200m Free - 1:50.08
100m Fly - 55.42
Last year Ryan won the 200 free in 1:48.17. He was almost 2 seconds slower this year but had nobody to race. The 2nd place finisher was more than 2.5 seconds behind. Ryan didn't swim the 100 fly at the Speedo meet last year, but his time (55.42) is must slower than he swam in last year's Missouri GP.
