Santa Clara Grand Prix - Sunday finals - Ryan placed 2nd in 100 back & 200 IM

100m back

Ryan didn't scratch and he came in 2nd! Still waiting for the results to show and I will put in the times.

200m IM

Ryan finished 2nd to Tiago Pereira again, but his time was great for this time of the season: 1:58.99. Conor Dwyer finished 3rd. Here are the splits:

1 Pereira, Thiago M 1:57.63
25.76 54.90 (29.14)
1:28.82 (33.92) 1:57.63 (28.81)
2 Lochte, Ryan S 1:58.99
26.40 56.24 (29.84)
1:30.76 (34.52) 1:58.99 (28.23)

Santa Clara Grand Prix - Sunday finals

Ryan qualified 1st in the 200m IM and 6th in the 100m back. He will be swimming in the 200m IM only tonight as he scratched the 100 back. He had a good split in the breaststroke leg in the 200 IM - 34.66.

Let's see if he can beat Thiago Pereira!

 1 Lochte, Ryan S 2:03.74 r:+0.67 27.43 59.20 (31.77) 1:33.86 (34.66) 2:03.74 (29.88)

Santa Clara GP - Ryan 2nd in the 400m IM

Santa Clara Grand Prix - Saturday prelims - Ryan qualifies for A finals in 400m IM and 200m back

400m IM

Ryan had the fastest qualifying time in the 400m IM prelims: 4:24.13

He split 39.52/36.72 on the breaststroke leg. It looks like his knee held up! Hopefully someone in the press will interview him about it.

1 Lochte, Ryan S 4:24.13
r:+0.65 26.94 58.28 (31.34)
1:32.67 (34.39) 2:05.29 (32.62)

2:44.81 (39.52) 3:21.53 (36.72)

3:53.92 (32.39) 4:24.13 (30.21)

Peter Vanderkaay had an extremely impressive 400m IM prelim. He finished 4th with a time of 4:25.65. Is training with Ryan turning him into an IMer? I watched the race, and he was more than a body length behind Thiago Pereira the whole race until the freestyle leg and then he zoomed past. PVK's free splits were 30.81/28.92 compared to Pereira's splits of 33.08/31.07.

If Pereira can improve his freestyle he will be a huge danger to win the 400m IM in London 2012.

200m back

Ryan had the second fastest time in the prelims for the 200m back, 2:01.46. Michael Phelps had the fastest qualifying time at 2:00.85. They will be right next to each other in tonight's finals, which is what everyone wants. Very exciting. Here are the splits. Notice, Ryan really slowed up the last lap. He has two tough races tonight!

 1 Phelps, Michael F 2:00.85 r:+0.69 29.12
59.67 (30.55) 1:30.30 (30.63) 2:00.85 (30.55)

2 Lochte, Ryan S 2:01.46 r:+0.75 29.02
59.66 (30.64) 1:30.29 (30.63) 2:01.46 (31.17)

Phelps-Lochte update

Speaking of Phelps, he's scheduled to face Ryan Lochte in three events this weekend -- the 100m fly, 100m freestyle and 200m backstroke. Being the top two swimmers on the U.S. men's team, Phelps and Lochte clearly won't be at their best since we're still a month away from the World Championships in Shanghai. Lots of questions still linger around these two regarding the 2012 Olympics. Which events will they swim? How many gold medals will each win? What happens in China next month will provide a glimpse into what could happen in London. Will the duo's performances in Santa Clara serve as a Shanghai preview? Probably not. But they're still entertaining to watch.

2011 Charlotte Ultraswim Results

Ryan had a so-so meet, placing 4th in the 200m free (1:49.48), 7th in the 100m fly (53.82), 4th in the 100m back (54.84), 1st in the B final of the 400m free (3:56.42 - faster back half than front half) and 2nd in the 200m back (1:58.82). He's had worse meets and he's presumably in hard training so I don't think the results are too disappointing.

The 200m IM worries me. Here's Ryan's split for the 200m IM prelims:

25.61 (fly)
31.37 (back)
40.54 (breast)
30.41 (free)

Total: 2:07.93

I thought Ryan was possibly hurt when he skipped the IMs in Ann Arbor last month. Now I'm convinced he's hurt because he can barely swim breast. There were very few swimmers in the entire meet who had a slower split than 40.54.

Needless to say Ryan skipped the finals for the 200m IM.

I really hope Ryan's groin or hamstring or whatever it is that is injured is better soon!

Thoughts on the Michigan Grand Prix

I don't expect Ryan to swim his fastest times in April. He's usually in hard training and very tired. Plus, I still think he may have some kind of injury, specifically because he didn't swim any IMs (no breaststroke). Here's what The Swimmers Circle had to say:

The Swimmers Circle

5. Ryan Lochte went a 2:00.21 to take 2nd in this race. Though he is not typically a big in-season performer, but he actually went winless in 6 races this meet. Based on what we saw from both him and Vanderkaay, however, I think that the elite group in Gainesville is putting in some pretty vicious yardage right now, so to hang tough through the 200 back on the last race was as well as could have been expected.

Here is the 200m back video:

Ryan finishes 2nd to Tyler Clary in the 200m back

Ryan had his second silver medal of the meet in the 200m back. His time was 2:00.21 and man did he look tired. Tyler Clary won with a very impressive time of 1:56.61, the 3rd fastest time in the world this year.

Earlier today at the Japanese championships, Ryosuke Irie swam a 1:54.08, which is textile world record and .04 faster than Ryan's time at Pan Pacs last summer (1:54.12). This summer is going to be interesting!!

Tyler Clary had a really good meet and his time in the 200 back is very impressive for this time of year. He has to be extremely tired too. Tyler's other events were 200 free (8th), 400 IM (1st), 200 fly (3rd), 400 free (1st), 200 IM (3rd). Nothing less than a 200 and competing in the "A" final in each event. Very impressive!

Ryan won the "C" final of the 100m free. His time was 51.3.

Ryan is swimming both the 200m back & the 100m free tonight

200m back - "A" final, lane 3
100m free - "C" final, lane 5

Just a note though - universal sports doesn't show "C" finals.

Michigan Grand Prix - Sunday finals

In this morning's prelims, Ryan qualified for the "A" final in the 200m back and the "C" final in the 100m free.

200m back

Tyler Clary: 2:00.92
Leonardo Fim: 2:02.38
Ryan Lochte: 2:02.64
100m free
Ryan Lochte: 51.46 (25.16)(26.30)
Ryan finished 21st overall in the prelims. Here it appears he didn't get a good start because his first lap (25.16) was much slower than the others. The second lap (26.30) was pretty good.
Here are videos of Ryan's races this weekend:

Michigan Grand Prix - 100m back results

Ryan placed second in the 100m back. His time was 54.81. Not bad!

Here were the top 3:

Michael Phelps: 54.15 (26.92)(27.23)
Ryan Lochte: 54.81 (26.92)(27.89)
David Nolan 55.10 (27.11)(27.99)

Very impressed with David Nolan, an 18 yr old who is going to Stanford next year. He really hung in there with MP & Ryan.

I know Nick Thoman, David Plummer and Matt Grevers weren't swimming at this GP, but it's good to see Ryan do so well in the 100 back. He has to be thinking of it as a possibility for Olympic trials.

p.s. I watched tonight's event live on facebook via Universalsports. I know it's a short event, but it was disappointing that the announcers (Rowdy Gaines & Paul Sunderland) didn't say much of anything about David Nolan and never said who finished 2nd and 3rd.
